Last summer I spent my time off from school traveling abroad—watching the World Cup in Germany, taking a canal tour in Amsterdam and trying not to fall off the Cliffs of Moher. I tried to see as many places as I could and immerse myself in each unique culture. But this summer is about discovering a new type of experience—work experience. So while the location is stateside, I’m still just as excited and curious as I was when I left for Europe last year.
As a rising senior English major at Clemson University, I knew this summer I had to think about my future and find an internship with career potential. As my impending 2016 graduation date edges closer and closer, I knew I had to figure out how I can apply my hard-earned English degree into the real world. Putting my dreams of becoming an author aside, I wanted to explore all realms of the writing industry. With prior experience working for a magazine and a newspaper, I figured the next outlet in a writing career would be the world of Public Relations. I knew very little about public relations and didn’t realize the vast network it encompasses. My internship with Bendure Communications has introduced so many outlets and new ways of combining my passion for writing and public engagement into a potential career. What’s so unique about this internship is the opportunity for me to practice legitimate, hands-on client work. I don’t feel like a factory-fed intern. I feel useful and engaged within the company.
What’s been the most exciting part for me so far has been my own transition from timid college student to an outgoing and involved employee. I’ve gone on client meetings, worked behind-the –scenes at client events, worked with website and social media design and implementation, and took a stab at some press releases. With my first month of work behind me, I’m looking forward to what the rest of my internship will bring and am extremely grateful to work with such an amazing company.
